Forecast from Open-Meteo. A rule of thumb, not a promise: starlings are unpredictable.

    How it works

Where does the roost come from?

    In this order:

    1. Confirmed by Somerset Starling Watch: set by us, for example after checking the hotline or being there. It stays for up to a week, or until it changes.
    2. Reports from people on site: each report counts fully for a day, then fades out over the next two. Each phone gets one vote per reserve. Two or more people make it "confirmed"; one report is shown as "not yet confirmed". "Gone down to roost" counts a little more than "murmuration", and "no starlings here" counts against a reserve.
    3. Last known: with nothing recent, the last place they were seen, with how long ago.

The roost can split. If people report more than one reserve, the main roost is the one with the most reports, and the others are listed underneath.

    Sunset times and conditions

Sunset is calculated for Ashcott Corner, between Ham Wall and Shapwick Heath. The display usually runs from about 40 minutes before sunset to just after. Conditions come from the Open-Meteo forecast for the hour of sunset: calm, dry, clearer evenings tend to give the best displays, and in rain or strong wind the birds often go straight down. It's a rule of thumb, not a promise.

    Who runs this?

Somerset Starling Watch is an independent, free community site made in Somerset. It isn't run by the RSPB, Natural England or Somerset Wildlife Trust. For the official word, call the Avalon Marshes starling hotline on 07866 554142 (1 November to 28 February).
